The thesis analyses the following issues:
historical development of energy and renewable energy sources legislation in the European Economic Community (EEC): the role of energy crisis of 1973 – 1974 in development of renewable energy legislation; international cooperation in the field of energy and renewable energy between EEC and third countries and membership of the EEC in international energy organizations dealing with energy;
the European Union renewable energy policy and legal framework: technological aspects of renewable energy legal framework, transition from renewable energy technological to innovative legal framework, renewable energy policy strategy and legal regulation;
the European Union smart grid legal framework: legal genesis of smart grids and current legal regulation of smart grids, obstacles in smart grid development and legal regulation;
future development of renewable energy sources in the European Union: 2030 renewable energy legal framework, and evaluation of the Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC and its relevance with the new renewable energy objectives of the European Union.
