- Nell’epoca del terrorismo di matrice islamica anche in letteratura si moltiplicano quei Traumascapes che nel 2005 che Maria Tumarkin definì come: "places across the world marked by traumatic legacies of violence, suffering and loss, (where) the past is never quite over". Quando un luogo viene colpito da un evento catastrofico che ne altera gli equilibri sociali, culturali ed economici, come visto in Europa dopo i totalitarismi e nel post-9/11, ciò che una volta rappresentava un organismo complesso muta nella sua struttura e assume nuove caratteristiche, simili a quelle di un corpo a cui viene inferta una ferita e che nella sua rigenerazione presenta cicatrici e nuovi tessuti. Ne vengono aperti e ridisegnati i confini, uniti e divisi dall’impatto che l’esperienza scioccante ha avuto sulla precedente unità. Con il terrorismo contemporaneo si vive ormai in uno stato di precarietà, caratterizzata dalla presenza fantasmatica di eventi catastrofici non possibili da elaborare, ma, anzi, facilmente rievocati e rievocabili, come i conflitti mondiali del secolo scorso. Ciò che cambia nel racconto dell’era del terrorismo è che il clima di paura e precarietà che questo genera, attraverso atti di violenza e di vera e propria propaganda mediatica, nutre la narrativizzazione traumatica fino ad anticipare gli eventi stessi. L’ Europa tra il fenomeno delle migrazioni e quello della lotta contro il Califfato sta lentamente ridisegnando la propria identità, chi ne racconta le evoluzioni alla luce dei sentimenti interni descrive un mondo in cui monta la rabbia, finché i sentimenti di intolleranza e terrore non diventino collante o discriminante dell’Unione stessa e si ripresenta il bisogno di ragionare sui concetti di memoria storica e costruzione identitaria. Per avviare questa riflessione si intende individuare, grazie agli strumenti critici dei Trauma Studies e dei Performance Studies, le evoluzioni del romanzo post-traumatico tra le guerre mondiali e il terrorismo contemporaneo.
- Trauma Studies have been marked by an intensified traffic between disciplinary, artistic and media languages. Cultural theory, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychoanalysis, Psychology, on the one hand, and Literature, Drama, Land and Body Arts, as well as Cinema, Television and the Net, on the other hand, have each contributed to render the concept of post-traumatic experience not only familiar but altogether really popular. Maria Tumarkin wrote about Traumascapes as:"places across the world marked by traumatic legacies of violence, suffering and loss, (where) the past is never quite over". When places are struck by traumatic experiences, as a consequence national landscapes turn into transnational traumascapes carved out of new geographies of anguish. Post 9/11 USA and since then also Europe, after recent terrorist attacks, have increasingly become places in which new fears have tied themselves to older and still not completely processed traumas, in the first place those connected to XX century world wars. In such scenarios old and new states of, by now latent, anxiety overlap and tend to merge, including the ways in which the European idea of community is transformed, lacerated, or, paradoxically, unified and enhanced through traumatic experiences. The act of retelling trauma through fiction faces the paradox of a possible double effect. If on the one hand to ‘retell’ is a way to enhance the grieving process, helping the subject to come to terms with private mourning, (and in this process art and literature have proved efficacious tools), when trauma gets mediatized and endlessly replicated via an infinite visual proliferation, what is its effect in cultural, social and collective terms? The research is focused in appraising to what extent traumatic forms of ‘narrativization’ can be considered a sort of thematic topos central in our cultural and psychological imaginary and its contribution to a new process of identity formation.
