- Il presente studio si prefigge di impiegare i reperti in vetro come indicatori fondamentali per ricostruire la storia culturale, tecnologica e commerciale dell’area orientale dell’Emilia Romagna nel Medioevo. La ricerca è stata condotta attraverso l’indagine dei reperti in vetro provenienti da quattro diversi siti inediti, distribuiti tra la costa e l’entroterra, e divisi in due macroperiodi: l’insediamento costiero di Ad Novas (Cesenatico) e la Basilica Petriana di Classe, per il periodo compreso tra il V e il X secolo, il Monastero di San Severo di Classe e il Castello di Rontana (Brisighella), per l’arco cronologico tra X e XV secolo. In virtù della loro differente vocazione insediativa, i contesti selezionati hanno permesso il recupero di una buona varietà di oggetti in vetro, affrontati in tutta la loro diversità: vasellame, ornamenti personali, vetro per l’edilizia, scarti e indicatori di produzioni sono stati indagati nel tentativo di comprendere relazioni culturali e commerciali antiche. I dati ottenuti sono stati confrontati con studi editi relativi alla medesima area d’interesse, con il territorio regionale, nazionale e mediterraneo. Laddove possibile, lo studio si è avvalso anche di approfondimenti iconografici e documentari editi, in grado di fornire ulteriori elementi di valutazione sul consumo del vetro nel Medioevo. I risultati restituiscono, per il V-X secolo, un quadro di sostanziale allineamento al trend commerciale del vetro mediterraneo, con il recupero di forme di comprovata tradizione romana. Alla quale corrisponde però una diversa selezione delle stesse, in stretta connessione con le peculiarità dei contesti selezionati. Al volgere del X secolo, i siti evidenziano un maggiore distacco formale: le morfologie in comune risultano drasticamente ridotte, segno evidente di una maggiore varietà di oggetti disponibili sui mercati. Per il periodo bassomedievale, il ricorso alle indagini archeometriche ha contribuito inoltre a riscontrare questa pluralità di apporti anche per i prodotti morfologicamente sovrapponibili.
- This dissertation aims to reconstruct the cultural, technological and commercial history of the Medieval western Emilia Romagna through the study of glass artefacts. The researches have been focused on the glass materials recovered from four unpublished archaeological sites chosen both for their location and chronology. In order to exemplify and compare the glass production between sites located along the Adriatic Sea coast and the inland, during two macro-phases (from the 5th to the 10th Century and from the 10th to the 15th Century), the investigations have been focused on the glass assemblages recovered from Ad Novas, the Basilica Petriana in Classe, the Monastery of San Severo in Classe and the Castle of Rontana. Given the different destination of use of the selected contexts, the material assemblages recovered revealed to be of a great variety. A selection of objects (vessels, windows panels, tesserae, ornaments, wastes and markers of production) has been analysed in detail in order to better understand the cultural and commercial relationships. Whereas possible, data obtained from the analysis have been compared to iconographic and documentary sources with the aim to provide new insights concerning the use of glass in the area object of study. Furthermore, the results of the analysis have been framed in to the wider regional, national and Mediterranean context. The research revealed, for the period included between the 5th-10th centuries, the redeployment of vessels forms of roman tradition with a different destination of use, strictly related to the context of recovery. Otherwise, by the 10th century, an increase of new and varied forms, due to the easier access to the variety of objects available on the markets and to a more accurate selection of the vessels form strictly related to the finding context, is attested.
