- Il presente studio ha l’obiettivo di mostrare come l’Africa e gli africani fossero percepiti, rappresentati e utilizzati come argomento retorico nella produzione letteraria degli autori niceni della medesima area territoriale fra IV e VI secolo. La discussione sull’appartenenza africana è sviluppata ponendo al centro la visione prospettica degli autori considerati: essa non cerca, quindi, di definire le caratteristiche che contraddistinguevano un africano in epoca tardo antica, ma di mostrare in quali casi, in Africa, un individuo o un gruppo di individui venisse identificato come tale, in quali contesti e per quale motivo fosse necessario affermare la propria appartenenza africana e cosa questo comportasse. Attraverso questa dissertazione si vuole esaminare quale fosse l’immagine che dell’Africa e dei suoi abitanti veniva veicolata dalla letteratura nicena di epoca tardo antica, come e se tale immagine fosse mutata dopo l’arrivo dei Vandali e se vi fosse, verso l’Africa stessa, un sentimento di appartenenza provato ed esplicitamente affermato.
- This thesis aims to show how Africa and Africans were perceived, represented and used as a rhetorical argument in the literary production of the Nicene authors of the same area between the 4th and 6th centuries. The discussion on African identity is developed by focusing on the perspective of the sources. It is more interested in showing in which cases, in Africa, individuals or groups were identified as African, than in defining the characteristics that distinguished an African from the others in Late Antiquity. Thus, it has proved to be relevant to detect in which contexts it was necessary to declare to be African or to belong to Africa, why it was so important, and, finally, what this declaration meant. This dissertation examines what the image of Africa and its inhabitants conveyed by the Late Antique Nicene literature was like, how this image changed after the arrival of the Vandals, and whether there was a sense of belonging to Africa broadly shared and explicitly stated.
