- Il progetto per la tesi di dottorato centra l’attenzione su due importanti tenori italiani fra Settecento e Ottocento: Giacomo David (1750-1830) e suo figlio Giovanni David (1790-1864). La scelta di studiare questi due tenori è perché la loro vicinanza biografica (padre e figlio) si collega a una lontananza estetica: possiamo dire che il padre è uno dei tenori importanti del Classicismo e il figlio uno dei tenori importanti del Romanticismo. Ci sono caratteristiche stilistiche diverse nella musica dei periodi in cui i due artisti hanno operato, che si rispecchia nelle caratteristiche diverse della loro vocalità: le parti scritte per i due David sono diverse stilisticamente fra loro sia perché erano diverse le due voci, sia perché era cambiato lo stile dei compositori, delle opere, dei tenori. Proprio questi due tenori rappresentano simbolicamente i due diversi periodi storici che influenzarono lo stile di canto e hanno in qualche modo promosso un’evoluzione molto importante nel modo di interpretare l’opera nei periodi classico e romantico. Quello che voglio fare nella dissertazione è raccogliere notizie sui due David per capire le loro voci e la loro arte di interpreti e attori attraverso i documenti che ci sono arrivati (tutti documenti cartacei, però, non sonori!). Attraverso i libretti e le storie dei teatri cerco di ricostruire la cronologia delle loro carriere; attraverso le partiture delle opere che hanno cantato cerco di capire la diversa vocalità, mentre attraverso le recensioni e le testimonianze di chi li ha visti e li ha sentiti cerco di capire qualcosa sulla loro voce e la loro arte di attori. Allo stesso tempo, anche conoscere i tipi drammatici dei personaggi che hanno interpretato è utile per capire il loro carattere.
- The project for the doctoral thesis focuses on two important Italian tenors who lived between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: Giacomo David (1750-1830) and his son Giovanni David (1790-1864). The choice to study these two tenors is because their biographical proximity (father and son) is linked to an aesthetic distance: we can say that the father is one of the important tenors of Classicism and the son one of the important tenors of Romanticism. There are different stylistic characteristics in the music of the periods in which the two artists worked, which is reflected in the different characteristics of their vocal style: the parts written for the two David are different stylistically from each other both because the two voices were different, and because it was changed the style of composers, operas, tenors. These two tenors represent symbolically the two different historical periods that influenced the style of singing and they have somehow promoted a very important evolution in the way of interpreting the opera in the classical and romantic periods. What I want to do in the dissertation is to gather information on the two Davids to understand their voices and their art as interpreters and actors through the documents that have arrived (all paper documents, however, not sound!). Through libretti and theater stories I try to reconstruct the chronology of their careers; through the scores of the works they sang I try to understand the different vocal qualities, while through the reviews and testimonies of those who saw them and heard them I try to understand something about their voice and their art as actors. At the same time, knowing the dramatic types of characters they interpreted is also useful for understanding their character.
