- La tesi si propone di inquadrare, sotto il profilo storico, teorico e analitico, quella variante morfologica del romanzo storico contemporaneo che va sotto il nome di ‘finzione testimoniale’: ricadono, all’interno di questa categoria, quelle opere letterarie che fanno ricorso alle forme e agli stilemi tipici della testimonianza. Se, da un lato, si preservano i dispositivi retorici propri del genere, dall’altro, la mise en fiction apre la via ad alcuni mutamenti significativi. Nei testi esaminati, chi parla non è infatti una figura priva di agency: in alcuni casi, si ha di fronte un testimone postumo; in altri, dei testimoni diretti, ma collocati nella “zona grigia” oppure sul lato dei carnefici. Sul piano metodologico, si assiste a una convergenza di più campi disciplinari, tramite i quali si delinea la cornice ideologica dei testi: in particolare, si ricorre agli studi di Giglioli sulla mitologia vittimaria e di Fisher sul concetto di hauntology, per definire i contorni del ‘tempo infestato’ entro cui tale forma di scrittura è emersa. Così facendo, l’analisi si propone di interrogare l’ambiguo rapporto di complicità intrattenuto dalle finzioni testimoniali con il presente. Nella prima parte della tesi viene ripercorso il tragitto che ha sancito il passaggio dal paradigma eroico a quello vittimario. Successivamente, viene discusso l’influsso della testimonianza in alcuni ambiti del sapere e nella produzione estetica occidentale, per passare poi alla trattazione della mitologia vittimaria e dei suoi effetti collaterali. Nella seconda parte, si colloca la finzione testimoniale nel solco della tradizione del romanzo storico, ponendola in confronto con le altre declinazioni contemporanee del genere. Si provvede poi a stilarne lo statuto teorico e a chiarire i criteri adottati per la selezione del corpus d’indagine. La terza parte è dedicata all’analisi comparativa dei testi, organizzata secondo un gradiente crescente di complicità di chi parla con la violenza storica.
- This thesis aims to study, from an historical, theoretical, and analytical point of view, a morphological variation of the contemporary historical novel which we may call the ‘testimonial fiction’: those literary works which make use of specific features of testimony, fall within this category. Whilst the rhetorical devices of the former genre are preserved, the mise en fiction leads the way to some significant changes. In the texts discussed here, in fact, the narrator does not lack any agency, whether it is a vicarious witness, or a direct witness of certain historical events, placed in the “grey zone” or on the side of the perpetrators. On a methodological level, the interdisciplinary approach of this research is meant to outline the ideological frame of the texts involved: more specifically, Giglioli’s work on the mythology of the victim and Fisher’s notion of ‘hauntology’ are gathered in order to draw the boundaries of the ‘haunted times’ in which this form of writing emerges. In doing so, the analysis questions the ambiguous complicity between testimonial fiction and present time. In the first part, the transition from the heroic to the victim paradigm is retraced. Then, the influence of testimony over certain academic fields and western cultural products is discussed, before moving on victim mythology and its side-effects. In the second part, testimonial fiction is placed within the tradition of the historical novel, by comparing it with other contemporary variations of the genre. Afterwards, the theoretical status of this specific form of writing is defined and the different criteria used to build the corpus are set out. The third part, is devoted entirely to a comparative study of the texts, structured according to an increasing degree of complicity of the narrators with historical violence.
