Description

  • The present work aims at exploring the relation between storytelling, experience, and narrative writing in three late Twentieth Century American novels: David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest (1996), Don DeLillo’s Underworld (1997) and Philip Roth’s American Pastoral (1997). The thesis is divided in three parts. The first one provides a theoretical background, focusing on the debate about world literature and the increasing critical awareness of storytelling as a paradigm. The literary and cultural American context at the end of millennium and its connections with narrativity will be specifically addressed. The second part presents a textual analysis of the novels, dealing with the plot structure and the use of narrative time. In the light of the research findings, the third part offers a precise narrative theory by resorting to Roland Barthes’ definition of writing and a philosophical idea of experience recently developed by Silvano Petrosino. In this last section, the relation between reality and fiction is at the core of the analysis, moving from the question of the “return to realism” and the theme of violence. Particular attention, then, is paid to a linguistic clue - the sign of the relation between narrative writing and the world out there.
