- Il presente lavoro di tesi si propone di offrire alcuni casi di studio sulla fortuna del classico nel teatro musicale di Sei e Settecento. I secoli presi in considerazione sono infatti indicativi di uno specifico sguardo sul passato, la cui analisi permetterà di indagare i diversi criteri di ricezione e rielaborazione delle fonti classiche nella librettistica. Data la natura interdisciplinare dell’indagine, si è pensato di impostare il lavoro premettendo ai due principali capitoli, relativi ai casi studio individuati, un primo capitolo introduttivo, relativo al rapporto fra mondo classico e opera in musica. La visione d’insieme sullo stato dell’arte ha permesso poi di individuare le coordinate del lavoro, teso a indagare i meccanismi di ripresa delle fonti classiche nella librettistica. Si è cercato di mettere a punto tali dinamiche ponendo l’attenzione su singoli personaggi e sulla rielaborazione dei loro miti nel tessuto drammatico antico per evidenziare, in seguito, scarti e affinità rispetto alla ripresa librettistica. I due capitoli centrali sono dunque focalizzati sulla fortuna di due personaggi, Alcesti ed Eracle/Ercole, e sono strutturati in modo fra loro affine. Innanzitutto, è stata proposta una analisi del dramma di riferimento per poi indagare la fortuna dei personaggi nel contesto della stessa antichità, in generi letterari e drammaturgici diversi. In seguito, sono state analizzate le riscritture in epoca medievale e rinascimentale, con particolare attenzione alle raccolte mitografiche; tale indagine ha permesso di avere una visione di insieme anche rispetto alle fonti che erano disponibili per letterati e artisti. Infine, sono stati selezionati alcuni libretti per ciascun personaggio, in modo da intraprendere una ricerca sulle fonti di riferimento il più possibile accurata, che tenesse conto di come miti, personaggi e drammaturgie subiscano inevitabili modifiche sia nel passaggio da un genere a un altro, sia a seconda dell’ipotesto di riferimento.
- This thesis aims at investigating, through two case studies, the reception of ancient myths, characters and themes into the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-century musical theatre. During these two centuries, looking back to antiquity was a characteristic feature of the operatic genre, whose birth itself was inspired by the models of Greek tragedy and Aristotelian theory. Indeed, late Renaissance Italian scholars who created the first operas tried to resort to both ancient Greek music theory and performative aspects of ancient Greek drama, theorized above all in Aristotle’s Poetics: the result was a wholly new dramatic form. After a preliminary chapter discussing how both ancient and modern scholars have studied the relationship between the classical world and the Opera, the following chapters, which are the main body of this thesis, take into account the reception of two characters, Alcestis and Herakles. My analysis explores their reception, respectively, from antiquity to the operatic stage, thus dwelling on the Renaissance, as it was a pivotal period for the rediscovery of the ancient sources. Although the present dissertation is conceived both as a philological and musicological study, emphasis is placed on librettos and librettists rather than on the music. The aim is investigating which sources the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-century librettos were based on – since during the Seventeenth century many librettists may have drawn inspiration from both Latin and Mythographic sources, not from a specific Greek drama – and how an ancient source had to been modified, also to comply with the musical theatre conventions. Moreover, it will be highlighted how an ancient drama could have been differently interpreted, depending on the cultural and historical background, especially when it had to be re-elaborated for a different dramatic genre as the operatic one.
