Two main trends in the humanities are interested in the relationships between technology, media and metaphors: the “media science”, with the initial core in McLuhan, and its current development; and a longer and more complex theoretical tradition on collective imagination, which dates back to Simmel, Durkheim, Mauss. Especially Benjamin has decisively influenced literary studies in the late twentieth century. The integration between the two currents - mediology and theories on collective imagination ‒ is actually in progress in Italy, from the nineties. This justifies – we believe ‒‒the hypothesis of a possible “mediology of literature”. The article tries to trace the movements, theories, and relevant passages, identifying in the writings of McLuhan cardinal directions to push forward the research, on the basis of a theoretical framework that allows to manage our everyday experience of immersion in the "playback of the arts" on the floor of an organized knowledge.

Due correnti fondamentali nelle scienze umane si sono interessate delle relazioni fra tecnologie, media e metafore: la “scienza dei media”, con il suo nucleo iniziale in McLuhan, tuttora in continuo sviluppo; una più lunga e complessa tradizione di studio e teorizzazione sugli immaginari collettivi, che risale a Simmel, Durkheim, Mauss e attraverso Benjamin ha influenzato in modo decisivo gli studi letterari del secondo Novecento. L’integrazione fra le due correnti – mediologia e immaginari - è in effetti in corso, in Italia, dagli anni Novanta. Ad essa si riferisce anche il cantiere aperto e possibile di una “mediologia della letteratura”. L’articolo ripercorre i movimenti, le teorie, i passaggi più rilevanti, e prova a individuare nella stessa elaborazione di McLuhan le direzioni-cardine su cui sviluppare le ricerche, sulla base di un impianto teorico che consenta di spostare sul piano di una conoscenza organizzata l’esperienza quotidiana di immersione nel “playback delle arti”.
