In the late 40s and early 50s television was finally coming out of its experimental stage and becoming a national medium all around the world. During this period, in the United States, the tv series was only one of the emerging narrative forms, in competition especially with the live anthology drama, which at the time seemed to be the most interesting and televisual one. While in Europe the anthology form will continue to thrive until the late 70s, in the United States it will virtually disappear in less than a decade, superseded by the filmed episodic series.Aim of this essay is to describe how the episodic series became the most important narrative form in the US, and how the gradual definition of television’s governance and financing system during the 50s had a great influence on the development of its narrative forms.

Nei tardi anni ’40 la televisione stava finalmente uscendo dalla fase sperimentale e iniziava la sua rapidissima ascesa, diffondendosi in tutto il mondo. Negli Stati Uniti, in questo periodo, la serie TV era solo una delle forme narrative emergenti e concorreva in particolare con i drammi antologici in diretta, che sembravano essere i più interessanti e più adatti alle caratteristiche del nuovo medium. Mentre in Europa i teledrammi continueranno ad avere una certa importanza e diffusione fino almeno ai tardi ‘70, negli Stati Uniti essi scompariranno quasi del tutto in meno di un decennio, soppiantati da una forma che conosce proprio qui il suo massimo grado di sviluppo: la serie episodica filmata.In questo saggio si cerca di ricostruire il percorso storico che ha portato la serie episodica a diventare la forma narrativa egemone nella televisione statunitense, con particolare attenzione all’influenza che il definirsi del sistema televisivo nel suo complesso ha esercitato sullo sviluppo delle forme narrative televisive nel corso degli anni ’50.
