The Visible Hand in the Documentary: Fictionalization and Recollection Strategies in the Post-Dictatorship Period in Latin America

La mano visibile nel documentario: finzionalizzazione e strategie della memoria nel ventennio post-dittatura in America latina.

The aim of this research is to reflect on how documentaries have been carrying out different modalities of fictionalization in the last 20years, whose subject matter is the possibility of working through the trauma of South American dictatorship. To that end, a sample of 12documentaries, shot between Uruguay and Argentina, will be taken into consideration by observing the language evolution of documentaries from the end of the 80`s until now. This analysis takes into account different perspectives: the relationship between history and memory, the objectivity of the point of view and the subjectivity of the narration and, finally, the comparison between rhetorical strategies of fictionalization and the exploitation of non-fiction narrative potential. A non-consistent panorama comes out where the author`s mark pits his skill with the more general documentary propension to include fiction films resources.

Lo scopo di questo studio è una riflessione sulle modalità di finzionalizzazione attuate nell'ultimo ventennio da quei documentari che hanno come oggetto la rielaborazione del trauma legato alla dittatura sudamericana. A tal scopo viene preso come esempio un campione di dodici documentari prodotti tra Uruguay e Argentina, osservando l'evoluzione del linguaggio documentaristico dalla fine degli anni '80 ad oggi. L'analisi prende in considerazione diverse prospettive: il rapporto che intercorre tra storia e memoria, tra oggettività dello sguardo e soggettività del racconto, e infine il confronto tra le strategie retoriche di finzionalizzazione e lo sfruttamento delle potenzialità narrative della non-fiction. Ne emerge un panorama non lineare, dove l'impronta autoriale si misura con la tendenza più generale del documentario ad incorporare nei suoi confini le risorse del film di fiction.
