Rhetoric and the ethical-political context. Considerations on the German reception of two translations

La retorica sconfitta dalla forza del contesto etico-politico. Riflessioni sulla ricezione di due traduzioni

Rhetoric is generally regarded as a quasi absolute authority, though its strength (i.e. its effect) depends on its reception by the public which will be confronting the individual works. This essay analyzes the reactions aroused by the German translations of two French novels, the first of which, Michel Houellebecq’s Les particules élémentaires caused a scandal at the time of its publication, while the second, Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes, was the object of a lively polemical debate in Germany even before the translation appeared. If a troubled response to Littell’s work was predictable, since it narrates the fictional memoirs of an SS officer, the polemic was more intense than expected. More surprising still, however, was the resonance attained by Elementarteilchen. In Germany, the frame of the novel – regarded as "inutile" in France, and evoking a society where cloning has replaced sexuality and reproduction – found itself at the centre of a vexed debate, during which Houellebecq was even acclaimed as a "Kulturphilosoph". As this essay contends, the German reception of these two novels is exemplary of the extent to which the same rhetoric may be implemented differently according to the variations in the ethical-political context.

La retorica è generalmente considerata come un ente quasi assoluto, mentre la sua forza, cioè il suo effetto, risulta dalla ricezione, dal pubblico con il quale le opere andranno confrontandosi. Analizzeremo le reazioni tedesche suscitate dalle traduzioni di due romanzi che, alla loro pubblicazione in Francia, hanno provocato in un caso uno scandalo (Les particules élémentaires di Michel Houellebecq), e nell’altro risposte clamorose (Les bienveillantes de Jonathan Littell), al punto che di ambedue si parlava in Germania ancora prima che ne uscisse la traduzione. Bisognava aspettarsi una sensibilità ben specifica nei confronti dell’opera di Littell, consistente nelle finte memorie di un ufficiale della SS, che però ha oltrepassato le attese. Più sorprendente ancora la risonanza delle Elementarteilchen: la cornice del romanzo, evocando una società dove sessualità e riproduzione sono sostituite dalla clonazione, sebbene considerata come “inutile” in Francia, si è ritrovata al centro dei dibattiti in Germania, dove Houellebecq ha addirittura acquisito – per un breve tempo – la reputazione di “Kulturphilosoph”. Così, la ricezione tedesca dei due romanzi dimostra fino a quale punto una stessa retorica possa essere recepita diversamente a seconda del contesto etico-politico.
