Literature for Francesco Orlando expresses a return of repressed socially enjoyable. Poets always contradict the world as it is, just because they give voice to desires which are against the rules of a community. In other words, Orlando’s theory supposes that literature is always openly or secretly partial, indulgent towards all what beyond its fictions provokes distance, diffidence, refusal or blame. If we accept this hypothesis we can’t accept all those critical approaches which interpret literature in a ideological key. If literature expresses the return of repressed desires it can’t never ratify the ruling ideology.

Il poeta contraddice continuamente il mondo come è, perché dà voce a desideri che sono in contrasto con le norme della comunità. In altre parole, la teoria di Orlando presuppone che la letteratura sia sempre, apertamente o segretamente, indulgente verso tutto ciò che al di là delle sue finzioni provoca distanza, diffidenza, rifiuto o colpa. Se accettiamo questa ipotesi non possiamo accettare tutti quegli approcci critici che interpretano la letteratura in chiave ideologica. Se la letteratura esprime il ritorno di desideri repressi, non può mai farsi portavoce dell'ideologia dominante.
