The aim of this article is to trace the relationship between ekphrasis, fetish and desire in Alice Munro’s short story Lichen. The core of the story is the description of a Polaroid snapshot which represents a female sexual organ. The analysis will focus on the different perspectives between male and female gazes that are represented in the story. On the one hand, from the male point of view the image is fetish, as it assumes an erotic and pornographic dimension. On the other hand, the female gaze deconstructs the violence inscribed in the image by using a verbal and rhetorical strategy that operates through irony and epiphany.

L’obiettivo del presente articolo è quello di analizzare la complessa relazione fra ékphrasis, feticcio e desiderio nelle sue ambigue implicazioni di gender all’interno del racconto Lichen di Alice Munro. Al centro della short story c’è la descrizione di un’immagine fotografica in cui viene esibito un sesso femminile. Scopo dell’analisi è di mettere in luce la duplicità dello sguardo maschile e femminile che si manfesta all’interno delle ékphrasis del racconto. Secondo la prospettiva maschile, l’immagine assume una dimensione feticistica, facendosi simbolo del desiderio erotico e del mito della giovinezza, tema fortemente presente nell’arco del racconto. Considerando successivamente il female gaze, si cercherà di mostrare come la parola, espressione dello sguardo femminile, decostruisca il discorso pornografico e la visione feticistica del corpo femminile attraverso una strategia retorica fondata soprattutto sulla figura dell’ironia.
