The essay analyses the different figures of desire in Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis. Through the analysis of the rhetorical strategies, and the intertextual resonances, it examines the function of metamorphosis in the interaction between language and performative dynamics, with reference to the recent Italian rewriting and representation of the text made by Valter Malosti. Metamorphosis is read as a figure of ‘impure’ desire not only as it makes identities more fluid and interchangeable, by challenging individual and social roles (such as male/female, active/passive, divine/human, nature/culture etc.), but also as it contributes to break the dichotomy between realty and ideal, and between life and death, by emphasizing the strength of the passions – enhanced by the relationship between poetry and performance – against death and reification.

Il saggio prende in esame il poemetto di Shakespeare Venus and Adonis, con riferimento alla messa in scena italiana di Valter Malosti. Attraverso l'analisi retorica e intertestuale, sono prese in considerazione le molteplici forme di rappresentazione del desiderio. Particolare rilievo assume la metamorfosi, che agisce su più livelli, da quello linguistico a quello simbolico e performativo. Figura di un desiderio "impuro", capace di rendere le identità più fluide e interscambiabili, mettendo in gioco e in discussione, come avverrà nel teatro di Shakespeare, ruoli individuali e sociali (uomo/donna; attivo/passivo; divino/umano; natura/cultura etc.), la metamorfosi assume altresì la funzione di spezzare la dicotomia tra realtà e ideale, e tra vita e morte, facendo sì che il desiderio entri nella morte come conservazione della vita. Essa manifesta inoltre il potere delle passioni, esaltate dai mezzi artistici e teatrali, contro la tendenza alla reificazione.
