The article aims to examine the transformations of space in the adaptation of La straniera, the novel of the Iraqi writer Younis Tawfik, made by the Italian director Marco Turco. The importance of these two works, which have recently won the Med Agora Award, sponsored by the Mediterranean Observatory and Suq Festival, comes from an historical value, since the film La straniera is one of the first film adaptations of Italian Narrative of Migration. From a textual analysis that highlights the differences between the themes in the novel and the screenplay, the article passes to the transformations of space, with the purpose of illustrating a series of reports linking the spatial coordinates with their geo-cultural values. The textual analysis leads also to consider the gap between the intercultural project of Tawfik and multicultural one of Turco. In conclusion, the article demonstrates, through an “the image of Italy” provided by the Iraqi author and the Italian director, how the spatial transformation may give rise to new interpretations of space, impacting on the original message of the literary text.

L’articolo ha come obiettivo quello di esaminare le trasformazioni dello spazio nell’adattamento de La straniera (1999), romanzo dello scrittore iracheno Younis Tawfik, realizzato dal regista italiano Marco Turco (2009). L’interesse per queste due opere, che entrambe hanno vinto recentemente il Premio Agorà Med, promosso da Osservatorio del Mediterraneo e Suq Festival, deriva da un valore storico, dal momento che il film La straniera è uno dei primi adattamenti cinematografici della narrativa della migrazione. Da un’analisi testuale che evidenzia le differenze a livello tematico tra il romanzo e la sceneggiatura, si passa alle trasformazioni dello spazio, con lo scopo di illustrare una serie di relazioni che collegano le coordinate spaziali con i rispettivi valori geoculturali. Da qui emerge un divario che separa il progetto interculturale di Tawfik da quello multiculturale di Turco. In conclusione, l’articolo dimostra, attraverso l’immagine dell’Italia fornita una volta dall’autore iracheno e un’altra dal regista italiano, quanto la trasformazione spaziale filmica possa dar vita a nuove interpretazioni dello spazio, influendo sul messaggio contenutistico originale del testo letterario.
