"A snake of black language": il processo come struttura narrativa in Babel Tower di A.S. Byatt

The article offers an analysis of the narrative dimension of the legal episodes in A.S. Byatt’s Babel Tower. The theoretical framework of the investigation is constituted by Nelson Goodman’s theory of worldmaking processes and, more specifically, its application in contemporary cultural narratology. The analysis focuses in particular on the function assumed by specific narrative techniques. The presence of metafictional devices on the one hand, and, on the other hand, of specific diegetic strategies employed by the narrator convey the narrative dramatization of the conflicts between different, juxtaposed master narratives. The existence and the influence of cultural and gender paradigms are reflected in these discursive instances. The resulting law in literature perspective (the presence in a narrative form of scenes and plots dealing with the legal field) could be interpreted as a highly self-reflexive tool, which testimonies the pervasive omnipresence of extra-literary narrative dynamics.

L’articolo indaga le dinamiche narrative delle vicende legali e processuali all’interno del romanzo Babel Tower di A.S. Byatt. L’analisi prende avvio dalla teorizzazione dei processi di worldmaking fornita da Nelson Goodman e dalle rispettive riletture narratologiche del suo pensiero. L’obiettivo è quello di rintracciare la dimensione narrativa che emerge dalla rappresentazione dei processi giudiziari all’interno del romanzo. Soffermandosi sulla messa in atto di dispositivi metariflessivi da un lato e sui meccanismi di focalizzazione e di enunciazione del narratore dall’altro, si vuole sottolineare la pregnanza della mise en scène di una conflittualità fra istanze discorsive differenti e opposte, che affondano le proprie radici in paradigmi culturali e di genere. Quello che ne risulta è che la prospettiva della law in literature, l’inserimento di scene, trame, dinamiche processuali all’interno di una forma narrativa può costituire un dispositivo altamente autoriflessivo, che induce anche a considerare la pervasività delle dinamiche narrative anche all’infuori dei confini testuali.
