Since then, the road and “the on-the-road” has been a persistent themeof the United States culture, an emblem of the country and of its extraordinary history of geographical and social mobility. A literarytradition of novels and stories, movies, songs and photographic images represented the road, yet very few are the artists who developed the theme in painting. Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Alfred Leslie, Edward Ruscha are, among a few others, some luminous exceptions.
