The paper analyses first the parodic references to Shakespeare in the movies featuring Totò as allusions to the 'Romanisation' of the Bard under the Fascist regime and his translation in stentorous, cumbersome word in the ensuing satirical production. The excess of this word is then coupled with its apparent opposite, the silence suddenly caused in the enamoured man by the sight of the beloved's beauty. By way of a comparison with this topic in Shakespeare and the Renaissance, there emerges a deeper similarity stronger than parody: the mask of silence voices man's bafflement in front of a woman, who bcomes a two-fold reminder of both the enticements of the flesh and the forebodying of the conclusion of life.

L'articolo esamina dapprima i riferimenti parodici a Shakespeare nel cinema di Totò e i rimandi alla romanizzazione del Bardo in epoca fascista e alla sua trasposizione in parola stentorea e ingombrante di cui farsi beffe. L'eccesso della parola viene poi accomunato al suo apparente contrario, il silenzio improvviso dell'uomo colpito dalla bellezza della donna, secondo un tema accostato spesso in Tot proprio all'eccesso della parola. Tramite un paragone con questa tematica in Shakespeare e nel Rinascimento, emerge una somiglianza più forte del rimando parodico. La maschera del silenzio esprime lo sgomento di fronte alla donna, duplice memoria sia della carnalità invitante sia scaramanticamente della conclusione della vita.
