Virginia Woolf’s learning to hybridize: Laurence Sterne's sneer at generic boundaries

Virginia Woolf a scuola di ibridismo: Laurence Sterne e lo sbeffeggiamento delle frontiere di genere

The paper aims at assessing the treatment that Virginia Woolf the critic reserved to Laurence Sterne, and at highlighting the main sites in Woolf’s ‘Poetics’ where the influence of the Augustan humorist was strongest, i.e. the delicate relation between Life and Literature, and the idea of a Poetry that transcends the limits of verse to encompass prose and prosaic expressions. In order to demonstrate this fruitful filiation, the essays where Woolf dealt directly with Sterne have been analyzed in parallel with other critical pronouncements and/or journal entries where the author developed the metaliterary hints that Sterne’s example roused.

Il contributo vuole presentare i pronunciamenti critici di Virginia Woolf a proposito di Laurence Sterne, accostando i due autori in una visione comparativa che sottolinei quegli aspetti della ‘poetica’ woolfiana che furono maggiormente influenzati dall’umorista augusteo: nello specifico il rapporto Vita-Letteratura da una parte, e l’idea di una Poesia che trascenda i limiti imposti dai domini tradizionali di verso e prosa. Per dimostrare questa fruttuosa filiazione teorica sono stati presi in esame i saggi in cui Woolf tratta esplicitamente dell’opera di Laurence Sterne, in aggiunta ad altri interventi critici e/o diaristici in cui la scrittrice sviluppa le suggestioni metaletterarie suscitate dall’esempio sterniano.
