From Elissa to Hannibal, between Tire and Carthage: six centuries of Mediterranean connections between East and West

Da Elissa ad Annibale, tra Tiro e Cartagine: sei secoli di connessioni mediterranee tra Oriente e Occidente

In this paper we examine the connections between the Levant and the West following the two most representative actors of the birth and development of Carthage as a daughter of the mother-city Tyre. Ideally retracing the footsteps of Elyssa and Hannibal, in the large period of a rapid metropolitan growth, we want to point out some interesting aspects related to historical, epigraphical and archaeological data on kinship and the strong link between Carthage and Tyre over a long period of Phoenician and Punic interconnections.

In questo articolo intendiamo esaminare le connessioni tra il Levante e l’Occidente mediterraneo seguendo i due più rappresentativi attori della nascita e dello sviluppo della città di Cartagine come figlia della madrepatria Tiro. Ripercorrendo idealmente le orme di Elissa e di Annibale, nel rapido ed impetuoso sviluppo della metropoli, vogliamo sottolineare alcuni aspetti interessanti legati ai dati storiografici, epigrafici e archeologici sul forte legame di parentela tra Cartagine e Tiro durante un lungo periodo contrassegnato da numerose interconnessioni fenicie e puniche.
