The first impressions that caused the changes made in Mexico City in its process of transformation into a modern city were captured by its poets drawing attention to different aspects of life in the capital. While from the popular poetry the record of the entrance of the electricity in the public road was left, from the official poetry was tried to witness the new cosmopolitan status of the Mexico City in the Porfirian era, through the fashion and the customs that were revealed in one of the main streets of the city. Comparing these poems allows us to know the initial strategies of poetic figuration of urban space that will continue to develop along different paths throughout the twentieth century until we reach our days.

Las primeras impresiones que causaron los cambios operados en la Ciudad de México en su proceso de transformación en una ciudad moderna fueron capturadas por sus poetas llamando la atención sobre distintos aspectos de la vida en la capital. Mientras que desde la poesía popular se dejó el registro del ingreso de la electricidad en la vía pública, desde la poesía oficial se buscó atestiguar el nuevo estatus cosmopolita de la Ciudad de México en la época porfiriana, a través de la moda y las costumbres que se pusieron de manifiesto en una de las calles principales de la ciudad. Comparar dichos poemas nos permite conocer las estrategias iniciales de figuración poética del espacio urbano que continuarán desarrollándose por caminos diversos a lo largo del siglo XX hasta llegar a nuestros días.
