Can machines ever have feelings and conscience? And if it were even possible, why should it be desirable? Science and science fiction narrative have been asking these questions for over a century, generating rather similar creative products. But are the processes that drive the imagination of storytellers and scientists the same? Analyzing some examples taken from science fiction and scientific research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, the article shows affinities and differences between these two areas of human creativity.

Le macchine potranno mai provare sentimenti e avere una coscienza? E se mai fosse possibile, perché dovrebbe essere desiderabile? Scienza e narrativa fantascientifica si pongono queste domande da oltre un secolo, generando prodotti creativi piuttosto simili tra di loro. Ma i processi che guidano l’immaginazione di narratori e scienziati sono gli stessi? Analizzando alcuni esempi tratti dalla narrativa di fantascienza e dalle ricerche scientifiche in materia di intelligenza artificiale, l’articolo mette in mostra affinità e differenze tra questi due ambiti della creatività umana.
