The paper examines the relation between the ‘possible’ and the ‘impossibile’ in Giacomo Leopardi’s Zibaldone and Operette morali. On the one hand, it explains how the category of the ‘impossible’ is closely connected to the issue of ‘contradiction’ and, at the same time, is subjected to a process of historicization and relativization. On the other hand, it illustrates Leopardi’s persistent tendency to imagine and to conjecture scenarios that are radically different from the normal “order of things” (e. g. by the use of ‘adynaton’ or unreal hypothesis). The main goal is to prove that Leopardi’s reflection on the ‘impossible’ is strongly linked to his critique of Modernity. This happens especially in two ways: by focusing on the role of poetry, and by taking a distancefrom the unconditional trust in technological advancement.

Il saggio prende in esame il rapporto tra il ‘possibile’ e l’‘impossibile’ nello Zibaldone e nelle Operette morali di Leopardi. Da una parte, si mostra come la categoria dell’impossibile siastrettamente connessa al problema della ‘contraddizione’ e, al contempo, sia sottoposta a un costante processo di storicizzazione e relativizzazione. Dall’altra parte, si mette in rilievo la persistente tendenza di Leopardi a immaginare e congetturare scenari alternativi al regolare «ordine delle cose» (mediante, per esempio, il ricorso all’‘adynaton’ e all’ipotesi dell’irrealtà). Il principale obiettivo è dimostrare come la riflessione leopardiana sull’impossibile sia saldamente intrecciata con la critica della modernità e, in particolare, tanto con la messa a fuoco del ruolo della poesia, quanto con la presa di distanza dall’incondizionata fiducia nello sviluppo tecnologico.
