A spoliation site in Thignica during the Byzantine age: epigraphic evidences and archaeological traces

Un cantiere di spoliazione a Thignica in età bizantina: indizi epigrafici e tracce archeologiche

Epigraphic record relating to the organization of the spoliation sites in late antiquity has so far been documented exclusively in Rome and Asia Minor. The data here provided by some unpublished inscriptions from the theater of Thignica (now Aïn Tounga, Tunisia) open new opportunities of investigation about this phenomenon in the North African territory, where reuse for the construction of churches and fortifications has been very common. At Thignica recycling was linked mainly to the building of the Byzantine fort. Here an arch inserted in the tower of the south-eastern corner offers another evidence of an organized dismantling of the monuments in the Roman municipium, followed by the reuse of their parts.

A fronte della penuria di testimonianze epigrafiche relative all’organizzazione dei cantieri di spoliazione nella tarda antichità, limitate a poche attestazioni urbane in età gotica, i nuovi dati forniti da alcune iscrizioni inedite dal teatro di Thignica (oggi Aïn Tounga, Tunisia) aprono nuove prospettive di indagine su questo fenomeno in un territorio, l’Africa settentrionale, che è stato interessato da una massiccia attività di reimpiego in funzione della costruzione sia degli edifici di culto cristiani sia delle fortificazioni bizantine. A Thignica tale attività di reimpiego era legata soprattutto all’erezione del forte bizantino, ove i dettagli di un arco inserito nella torre dell’angolo sud-orientale hanno lasciato un’altra eloquente traccia di uno smontaggio organizzato degli edifici del municipio romano.
