Studies of iconography and epigraphy on African mosaics (I). Gladiator, venator or agitator? About a mosaic of Sousse (Tunisia)

The object of the present study is a mosaic panel with a figurative representation which is in fact only a part of a larger pavement which was discovered in 1902 in the Roman necropolis known as Camp Sabatier in Sousse. Exhibited since its discovery in the archaeological museum of the city, it was part of a mosaic that adorned the ground of a now defunct mausoleum. It appears, near what at first glance seems to be an altar, a male figure standing in front, missing the head, the right shoulder and the right arm, and whose left hand is placed on a rectangular object represented vertically and which looks like a shield.

L’objet de la présente étude est un panneau mosaïqué avec une représentation figurée qui n’est en fait qu’une partie d’un pavement plus grand qui a été découvert en 1902 dans la nécropole romaine dite du camp Sabatier à Sousse. Exposé depuis sa découverte dans le musée archéologique de la ville, il faisait partie d’une mosaïque qui ornait le sol d’un mausolée aujourd’hui disparu. Il figure, près de ce qui à première vue semble être un autel, un personnage masculin debout de face, auquel manquent la tête, l’épaule droite et le bras droit, et dont la main gauche est posée sur un objet rectangulaire représenté verticalement et qui ressemble à un bouclier.
