The article analyzes two novels that, through fiction, try to explore a crime story, the Fritzl case: Elisabeth by Paolo Sortino and Claustria by Régis Jauffret. The aim of the article is to show how the fictional narrative structure can help to reflect on actions that go far beyond the common norm. Through the “counterpart theory” of David Lewis, the article shows how these fictions create alternative worlds to the current one, adapting the factual data to their own narrative needs. From these “similar” worlds, but not “identical” to ours, the reader can draw a judgment not on the case itself, which remains inaccessible in its monstrosity, but on the relationship that everyone establishes with human action. The exceptional case, then, becomes a point from which to look at the possibilities of the human being in general, in order to develop a greater awareness of his own means. From all these considerations it turns out that literature, instead of using these distressing events only to shock or attract attention, becomes a privileged tool for the individual’s ethical maturation.

L’articolo analizza due romanzi che, attraverso la finzione, cercano di esplorare un fatto di cronaca nera particolarmente disturbante, il caso Fritzl: Elisabeth di Paolo Sortino e Claustria di Régis Jauffret. Lo scopo dell’articolo è quello di mostrare come la struttura narrativa finzionale possa aiutare a riflettere su azioni che vanno ben al di là della norma comune. Attraverso la “teoria delle controparti” di David Lewis, l’articolo mostra come queste finzioni creino dei mondi alternativi a quello attuale, piegando i dati fattuali alle proprie esigenze narrative. Da questi mondi “simili”, ma non “identici” al nostro, il lettore può trarre un giudizio non tanto sul caso in sé, che resta inaccessibile nella sua mostruosità, ma sul rapporto che ogni individuo instaura con l’agire umano. Il caso eccezionale, allora, diventa un punto da cui guardare le possibilità dell’essere umano in generale, al fine di maturare una maggiore consapevolezza sui propri mezzi. Da tutto ciò risulta che la letteratura, anziché usare questi eventi angoscianti solo per scandalizzare o attirare l’attenzione, diventa uno strumento privilegiato per la maturazione etica dell’individuo.
