- Questo contributo esplora un campo di ricerca a cui è stata riservata un’attenzione soltanto marginale: la punteggiatura nelle scritture di “semicolti”; l’indagine viene condotta su un corpus costituito da lettere di prigionieri di guerra italiani raccolte dal filologo romanzo Leo Spitzer negli anni del primo conflitto mondiale. Dopo aver illustrato le peculiarità linguistiche delle missive, si concentra l’attenzione sull’uso dei segni interpuntivi: l’analisi rileva l’affiorare di una “coscienza testuale” negli scriventi semicolti; questi ultimi riconoscono il ruolo centrale della punteggiatura nella strutturazione del testo e pertanto di essa si avvalgono seppure con esiti che talvolta si discostano dalla norma. Punctuation in the writing of semi-literate italians: the “letters” of Leo SpitzerThis paper explores a field of research which has been given only marginal attention: punctuation in the writing of the “semi-literate”. The investigation was conducted based on a corpus consisting of letters from Italian prisoners of war collected by the Romance language philologist Leo Spitzer during the First World War. After having illustrated the linguistic peculiarities of the missives, attention is focused on the use of inter-punctuation. The analysis reveals the emergence of a "textual conscience" in the semi-literate writers, who recognize the central role of punctuation in the structuring of the text and therefore make use of it even with outcomes that sometimes deviate from the norm.
