- The essay provides a case study concerning Lorenzo Da Ponte’s Memorie: two editions were published in New York in the second decade of the 19th century, but they did not spread widely in Europe. The reference edition in Italy is still the one published in 1918 by Giovanni Gambarin and Fausto Nicolini. Although it could be considered a serious work (expecially because it compares the two prints edited by the author), it is not properly a critical edition. However, due to the difficulties of the collation, it would be hard to improve it. Here the text of the Orazione (a long speech held in 1828 and included in the fifth part of the autobiography) is presented, with some questions about the possibility of a ‘separated’ edition and the definition of the textual rendering criteria. A ‘critically verified’ reconstruction like this could hopefully open a reflection about alternative editions, when the traditional ones are not possible due to a lack of resources or academic credit.
- Il saggio presenta un caso di lavoro riguardante le Memorie di Lorenzo da Ponte, pubblicate a New York in due edizioni negli anni Venti dell’Ottocento e scarsamente diffuse in Europa. Edizione di riferimento in Italia è ancora oggi quella pubblicata nel 1918 nella collana di Laterza Scrittori d’Italia, a cura di Giovanni Gambarin e Fausto Nicolini: si tratta di un contributo serio (soprattutto perché pone il problema del confronto tra le due stampe d’autore) ma non propriamente critico, eppure difficilmente superabile per le difficoltà legate alla collazione. Si presenta qui il testo di una lunga Orazione pronunciata da De Ponte la sera del 10 marzo 1828 ed inserita nella quinta parte dell’autobiografia, con una serie di interrogativi riguardanti la legittimità di un’edizione ‘separata’ dalle stesse Memorie e la definizione dei criteri di resa testuale. È auspicabile che una ricostruzione ‘criticamente verificata’ come quella proposta avvii una riflessione sulle possibilità alternative alle edizioni critiche tradizionali, quando non praticabili per penuria di risorse o difetto di credito accademico.
