La raffigurazione Teodora nel mosaico di San Vitale a Ravenna ha contribuito in misura determinante alla costruzione della fama dell’imperatrice, che ha segnato profondamente l’immaginario visivo per secoli, al punto da essere erroneamente spesso ricordato come l’unico ritratto a lei contemporaneo. Ieratico e idealizzato, questo ritratto in realtà ci dice ben poco delle sue reali fattezze, tanto che nei secoli successivi molti ritratti semplicemente privi di indicazione sul soggetto hanno potuto essere associati a Teodora.
