- [Italiano]: Mersa/Wadi Gawasis è il porto del Medio Regno (ca. 2055-1650 a.Cr.) da cui partivano le navigazioni egiziane verso la terra di Punt. Il sito è localizzato sulla costa egiziana del Mar Rosso tra Safaga e Qosseir. Dal 2001, il sito è stato indagato da una Missione archeologica italo-americana dell’Università “L’Orientale” e della Boston University, diretta da Kathryn A. Bard e Rodolfo Fattovich. Il libro è la pubblicazione dei risultati delle campagne condotte dalla Missione tra 2006 e 2011 e comprende la descrizione degli scavi archeologici e gli studi paleoambientali, che hanno fornito nuovi dati sulla storia e l’organizzazione del porto. Inoltre, i materiali archeologici rinvenuti nel corso di tali indagini sono descritti e discussi. Tra questi si segnalano stele, ostraca, iscrizioni su legno e papiro, cretule, ceramica locale e importata, materiale litico, reperti connessi alla navigazione, resti macrobotanici e malacologici. The site is located on the Egyptian Red Sea coast between Safaja and Qosseir. Since 2001, this site has been investigated by an Italian-American Joint Expedition of the University “L’Orientale” and Boston University directed by Kathryn A. Bard and Rodolfo Fattovich. This book is the publication of the results of the 2006-2011 field seasons. It includes the description of the archaeological excavations and the paleoenvironmental studies, providing data on the history and organization of the harbor. The associated finds are also described and discussed. These include several texts (stelae, ostraca, inscription on wood, papyri), sealings, local and imported ceramic materials, lithics, finds related to the ships and navigation, macrobotanical and malacological remains. They provide crucial insights into the ancient Egyptian activities in the Red Sea.
