In 2018 the Brooklyn Museum of New York announced the decision to hire a white woman as a curator of its African collection causing some reactions in the activist world. Collectives committed to the cause of inclusion in public institutions, such as Decolonize This Place, have expressed the need for a change in the museums' narratives and practices, considered to be still too ethnocentric. This episode is just a part of a broader phenomenon. Considering the museums' educational potential and the ideal of democratic freedom they represent, activists have tried in the last decades to engage in a more profound confrontation with these institutions. Attacks on social media, public protests and petitions seem to aim at the same purpose: to decolonize museums from the outside. Through a comparative analysis of the narratives and the curatorial practices of two major anglo-saxons museums - the Tate Modern and the Brooklyn Museum - and using the post-colonial critique as theoric background, this study aims to understand the impact of the activist movements in the institutional debate about museum accessibility and inclusion.

Nel 2018 il Brooklyn Museum di New York ha annunciato la decisione di assumere una donna bianca come curatrice della sua collezione africana provocando le reazioni nel mondo dell’attivismo.Collettivi come Decolonize This Place, da sempre impegnati per ottenere maggiore inclusione nelle istituzioni pubbliche, hanno espresso la necessità di un cambiamento delle narrazioni e delle pratiche museali, considerate ancora come fortemente etnocentriche.Questo episodio si inserisce in un più ampio fenomeno. Considerato il potenziale didattico dei musei ed il fatto che rappresentano l’ideale di libertà democratica, gli attivisti hanno tentato negli ultimi decenni di ingaggiare un confronto diretto con queste istituzioni. Attacchi sui social media, manifestazioni e lettere aperte sembrano avere in questo contesto lo stesso obiettivo: decolonizzare i musei dall’esterno.Attraverso l’analisi comparativa delle narrazioni e delle pratiche curatoriali adottate da due importanti musei anglosassoni, la Tate Modern e il Booklyn Museum, ed utilizzando la critica post-coloniale come punto di riferimento teorico, questo articolo tenta di comprendere l’impatto che il movimento degli attivisti sta avendo nel dibattito istituzionale su accessibilità e inclusione nei musei.
